About Me

Jilin Zhang

(b. 2005) is a new music composer currently studying at the University of North Texas. Coming from a wind band background, he writes primarily for large ensembles and instrumental mediums, having his works played by ensembles like the UNT Wind Ensemble, Green Brigade, and the Four O’ Clock Lab Band, but he has also written for chamber ensembles such as the UNT clarinet choir and the Echo Trio, as well as electronic and electroacoustic works which he has released and published digitally.

As a composer, he enjoys experimenting with new musical material and techniques not commonly found in usual instrumental music. He aims to write inspiring and challenging music for advanced wind ensembles involving inventive techniques, complex rhythmic devices, and rich harmony, taking on a more modern sound. These compositional devices can also be found in his music for smaller ensembles. Such pieces include Flight of the Blackbird (2023), CONNECTING… (2024), and Portraits of a City (2024) which have been read and performed many times. With his large ensemble music, he aims to inspire young musicians across the nation to continue enjoying music.

Outside of composition, he performs as a multi-instrumentalist, primarily playing the clarinet. Having played clarinet for nearly a decade, he has performed with prestigious ensembles like the University of North Texas wind ensemble and previously in multiple honor bands. His teachers have included Scott Devlin, Erik Cole, and Daryl Coad. He has also conducted his own works in performances and guest conducted various ensembles in performance.

Jilin is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of North Texas where he plans to graduate in 2027, with a major in composition and minors in music theory and music business. He is primarily based in Orlando, Florida and Denton, Texas.
